BERNARDINA VALLADARES


BORN: Born in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico in November 15, 1913. Nina died at age 93 on April 20, 2007 in Delano, California.

RESIDENCE: Interred at the Delano Cemetery in Delano, California.

EARLY CHILDHOOD: Bernardina (Nina) was born in Chihuahua, Chihuahua (Mexico). She is the second of ten children born to Rosalio Valladares and Maria Bonifacia Godina. She came with her family from Mexico. She was born when her father was stationed with Federalistas Mexican Army in Chihuahua, Chihuahua (Mexico). They stayed there until 1914 when ___when decided to flee to the United States of America. They crossed the border somewhere in the Big Bend area of Texas. The had fled with an Army wagon loaded with weapons and ammunition. But it got so heavy at the crossing that they decided to dump all the weapons and ammunition in the Rio Grande. Also, they did not want to get caught by the U.S. Government transporting weapons. The arrived in Chisos, Texas (which no longer exists) where her father obtained employment at the Chisos Mining Company (located in the Chisos Mountains). From there they moved to San Angelo, Texas and by 1924 they were living in Loraine, Texas. They finally arrived in the Rhineland area sometime around 1927. She married around 1930 at age seventeen. Her father died at an early age when she was 19, and had just had a daughter. Shortly thereafter she moved to El Paso, Texas where they lived until 1940. Her husband Camilo was sent to work on the railroad in a small town between Deming and Lordsburg, New Mexico, a few miles from El Paso. They lived there from 1940 until 1945. After that, they moved to El Paso for a short while and then on to California. Living in Castroville for a short while with Camilo's brother (one of twelve). From there they moved on to the San Joachin Valley, north of Los Angeles (a mostly farming area). In 19__ she moved to Earlimart where she lived most of her life. She moved to Delano, California with her daughter Beatrice in 19__ due to her increasing alziemers illness. Her mother Maria died in Altus, Oklahoma in 1969, living her last days with her oldest sister Gregoria Nu?

EDUCATION: Nina had very little formal education, went through the third grade. She has limited ability to read or write.

MILITARY: Nina did not serve in the military.

CAREER: She spent her growing up years working as a part of the family group working the fields in the Knox Cty/Rhineland area. She also worked helping clear up pasturelands for cultivation. Nina was a farm field worker all her life. As a young woman in Texas she worked in the fields. After her move to California she was a grape picker until she retired in ____. She did not participate in the Cesar Chavez's movement in California.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: Nina had no hobbies or other activities.

MARRIAGE: Nina met Camilo Ramirez in 19__ in Knox City. She married Camilo in Knox City in 1930. She became a widow in 1978 and did not remarry.
