CAMILA VALLADARES


BORN: July 2, 1921 in San Angelo, Texas. Died at age 85 in Madera, California on August 26, 2006.

RESIDENCE: Camila was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Madera on August 30, 2006.

EARLY CHILDHOOD: Camila was born in San Angelo, Texaa Texas. She was the sixth of ten children born to Rosalio Valladarez and Maria Bonifacia Godina. Her father, Rosalio Valladarez died before she was three years old. It was during this time that the family moved to a farm about 6 miles outside of Knox City, TX. Eventually moving into town about 1940. She lived with her mother, Maria Godina Valladarez until she moved to Wichita Falls in 1952. She spent most of her growing years in the Rhineland/Knox City, Texas area, working as a farm laborer with the family. . Camila spent her early years in San Angelo before the family arrived in the Rhineland/Knox City area around 1927 and spent the rest of her young life in the area. Camila had TB while a young woman, and spent some time at a sanitarium in San Angelo, Texas around 1943-44.

EDUCATION: Camila did not have much in the way of a formal education. She spent a year or two at a school in the Munday/Knox City are known as Sunset School. She knows how to read and write in Spanish. And has limited knowledge of English.

MILITARY: Camila did not serve in the military.

CAREER: While growing up in Knox City . Camila worked as a field hand during the cotton growing season, hoeing in the spring, and picking in the fall/winter. . Camila was a farm worker all of her life, working in the fields, hoeing and picking cottons. After moving to California in July 1965, first to San Jose for a short time and eventually to Madera where they bought a vineyard. She was involved in growing and harvesting grapes with her husband and children.

OTHER ACTIVITIES:

MARRIAGE: Camila saw JoseUre�a for the first time in 1948, and fell in love with his eyes. Later on she met him through her brother, Encarnacion (Chon) while he was working here in the United States as a Mexican bracero. He went back to Mexico, but when he returned, she and Jose got married in January 29, 1949 in the Catholic Church in Knox City, Texas. But not before she wrote to his Priest in Mexico to check him out. Shortly after getting married (later in 1949), they went to live in Mexico for a while. They had two children while living in Mexico. Camila came back to the states about 1953, while Jose stayed back in Mexico to get his papers in order. Camila stayed with her brother Leo and his wife, Irene in Dallas until Jose came back to the states, and they settled in O'Brien, TX. She stayed there until her son Ramon Salvador was tragically run over by a truck. She went back to Mexico, had a son and gave him the same name. She then moved back to O'Brien and lived there until 1965 when the family moved to California and remained there.
